Hillary’s Coming Out Story from I Want the World to Know on Vimeo.

Hillary, one of my oldest friends, grew up in a suburb south of Boston. Though we shared our childhood years together, it wasn’t until recently that we both discovered that we were both gay! Therefore, I knew I had to interview her for this project! Hillary had an epiphany at summer camp at age 15 when she discovered that a fellow female camper had feelings for her. She went through the next few years dating both men and women, and she now defines herself as gay. A talented musician, Hillary started writing music as a teenager and was a member of an a capella group in college. She now lives in Brooklyn with her longtime girlfriend and works for pingg.com. Check out Hillary’s story!

Steven’s Coming Out Story from I Want the World to Know on Vimeo.

Steven grew up in Virginia in a very Christian household. As a child he wasn’t interested in playing football; instead, he loved playing school. Though his grandmother, a very influential person in Steven’s life, supported him as a child with his “alternative” interests, she was shocked when Steven came out to her while he was in college. His father, who he describes as homophobic, was surprisingly calm when Steven came out to him. Steven is proud to live out and proud and makes no apologies for who he is. He loves deeply and spends time with friends who support every part of him. Steven is articulate and honest in his storytelling; he shares his journey with ease and humor, a very intelligent and inspiring young man. Please watch, and stay tuned for Part 2!

Edgar’s Coming Out Story from I Want the World to Know on Vimeo.

Edgar grew up in El Paso, Texas, where he had no gay role models or gay friends. He hinted that he was gay to a few of his close friends during his senior year in high school, who were all supportive, but he waited a while before telling anyone else. Ultimately, it was his experience at NYU that pushed him out of the closet. He came out to his parents, both of whom are Mexican and Catholic, while home for his winter vacation. Although it took some time for his mother to get comfortable with her son’s sexuality, she is now fully supportive of Edgar and his partner. Edgar believes that being honest and patient with yourself are the keys to coming out in a healthy way. He is intelligent, articulate, and fabulous! Watch his story now!

Lynn and Cathy from I Want the World to Know on Vimeo.

In August 2009, actress/vlogger/therapist Cathy DeBuono invited her mother, Lynn, to talk about her experience dealing with Cathy’s sexuality on her live vlog “What’s Your Problem?” When Cathy first came out to her mother, she did not receive the reaction she thought she would get. Lynn was surprised, confused, and angry. She moved through many different stages of grief including feelings of confusion, guilt, and mourning the loss of the child she thought she knew. Though it took her a few years to fully accept and understand Cathy’s life, she is now one of her daughter’s biggest fans! Lynn urges young people to be patient with their families but to never tolerate living in the closet. She believes that everyone should come out and live full, honest lives. Lynn is the perfect example of a parent struggling with their own “coming out” experience: coming out to support and accept their LGBTQ son or daughter. Lynn, you are a true inspiration for everyone! Alex grew up in a suburb of Philadelphia, PA, and first came out to his brother when he was 15. His family is supportive, but Alex’s parents initially did not want him to come out in high school for fear he would be known as the “gay kid.” Alex finally came out to his peers in college at Tufts University. Alex became involved in many LGBTQ organizations in college and discovered he felt most comfortable defining himself as queer. Today he lives in Brooklyn, NY, and is very active in social advocacy groups including JFREJ (www.jfrej.org).
